Review on πŸ”Œ Enhanced Performance Motorola SB5100 Surfboard Cable Modem by Dushawn Walker

Revainrating 5 out of 5

no complaints about functionality - this one seems to work the same as the old one and the A to B speed test

10th/month for rent which I've been doing since 2012. No complaints about functionality after 1 day of use - this one seems to work just like the old one and speedtest.net's 'A to B' shows no change in speed. Questionnaire In addition, the modem was shipped quickly and arrived just a few days after I ordered it. I only give three stars for two reasons: 1. The product received does not match the advertising. This is advertised as the SB5100 Surfboard. I received the SB5120 surfboard. They are visually indistinguishable apart from the number on the front and I have no idea what the difference is but I ordered the SB5100 specifically because I leased it from Comcast so I wanted to make sure they had it cannot refuse. Activate the ones I bought (see below for what they did). Also, the photo intentionally shows a Motorola box, but the product I received didn't come in that box but came in brown (meaning it may have been repackaged at some point).2. This modem is considered "End of Life" by Comcast and is as of 7/2013. When I tried (01/2015) to activate it over the phone the support agent refused, although the SB5100 I rented was also declared discontinued since 6/2013 and they never bothered to notify me or give me a new modem. Turns out all I had to do was plug it in, try to use it, and was presented with Comcast's self-service webpage, which enabled me to activate it in minutes. I'm happy with the product for now (and my SB5100 hasn't given me any problems for more than 2 years) but as this product is considered 'End of Life' it's probably only a matter of time before Comcast makes it incompatible doing and forcing me to buy a new one. So I would advise others in a similar situation to buy a new one that is on the supported list.

Pros
  • Test results are stable
Cons
  • Could have chosen a newer model
