I love this new technology that offers even more functionality as I have the previous generation prime lens. You definitely need a steady hand, if not better to have a tripod or monopod for stabilization when using the 5x zoom. You can tell from my usual wide shot when my phone looks around and how 1x zoom is. A 5x zoom is at least 300-400mm in my opinion, if not more in the 35mm standard. The photo and video modes work great and the IR is bright enough at level 1 (and up to 3) even though it's not night. Although it takes 8 AA batteries I find this to be a very durable device with great battery life! Best of all you can use it like regular binoculars during the day like I did with the manual focus knob, the pictures aren't bad at all!
