I ordered these to attach card panels to card bases. You only use 1 bushing on the flatter side and then slide the protruding side to push the bushing apart. The bushings don't cut through the material, they have to be inserted into an existing hole, so I don't know how well that works with heavier material. The pliers do not have a locking mechanism to keep the handles closed. They're strong enough, but you'll need to use some "muscle" to flatten the sleeve.
