Review on DeWalt DWA1184 Black Oxide Drill by Matt Watson

Excellent Value Twist Drill Bit

As noted in other reviews here, as well as reviews from Home Depot etc, there is much confusion as to the classification of DeWalt drill bits. Their "Black Oxide" set is numbered SW1162, but on the DeWalt website it also appears to be painted black and gold. The website also implies that the only way to get "Black Oxide" is to order a set of 1162 as the individual bits are not listed. All of their sub-titanium grade bits appear to be from the "Black & Gold" HSS line, set number DWA1184, which is the part number listed above for this product. Other than that, at $10 this is Revain's cheapest non-metric bit set (be careful as most inexpensive kits have inches in their name, but the fine print is metric and when boxed so is the indexing metric, so take your conversion app with you to make your choice). All I was looking for was some disposable bits for drywall and other inaccurate bit dulling operations and these are great for that and probably good for everyday DIY drilling, just before anything that's more than sheet steel. If you're worried about quality you can get the same set from the Titanium series for $4, or for $20 you can go all the way and get 8% industrial cobalt at DeWalt or Bosch. I doubt you'll find anything better for $10 or less, especially since they're actually DeWalt, they have non-rotating shafts, come in a standard DeWalt modular stacking box, and in standard inch units as on the box, which is nice are numbered... so is the bit stock - all the things that normally come with higher end bits. It's legitimate to complain about a misleading photo and description, but it would be more constructive if those of you who want to downgrade and complain could show the rest of us where there's a better deal - either a lower one value or higher the same price - so we can pack it. I don't think this will be an easy task.
