Original Review: I got this to use a spare mSATA SSD on my Raspberry Pi3B and it works fine with /boot on the SD card and /(root) on the SSD. When trying to clean boot via USB on the Pi3B, it works when the system is on, but rebooting and shutting down is unreliable. This is a common problem with USB booting on the Pi3B as its boot code is quite primitive and incompatible with many devices. Leaving /boot on the SD card is 100% safe (booting, rebooting and shutting down work as expected). Leaving /boot on the SD card is also faster as there is a 5 second timeout to check the SD card before booting from USB. So there really aren't any downsides. The /boot partition is only written to during kernel/firmware upgrades, so there is very little wear and tear on a /boot-only SD card. How does an SSD work on a Raspberry Pi3? Actually not bad. Obviously you don't get as huge a speed boost as you would with a native SATA computer. Read/write will be limited to the Pi3's USB 2.0 interface, but there are a number of other performance-enhancing features that make SSDs faster than SD cards, so this is a very noticeable improvement. SSD drives are also more reliable than SD cards and much better used as a computer operating system drive. Also note that this is a USB 3.0 adapter, so you can use the included USB 3.0 AA cable to connect it to a USB 3.0 computer. Quickly create an SSD image, and when next-gen Raspberry Pi computers support USB 3.0, this adapter is ready. seems to have solved the reboot issue, but the included power cable doesn't fit the GPIO pins with a slight bend in it (the connector on the cable is too big).
