Side arrows: Emergency flashing light

Good light but the description says the black and yellow wires need to be connected together for split mode. It didn't work so I connected the red and yellow wires together and the light came on. Problem is I want the yellow side lights to work without the center white lights on and it looks like you need two sets of wires and switches to do that? It doesn't make sense to have two switches, so any suggestion is welcome. Many Thanks
