Review on LG 43UN700-B: 4K Display with Type C Inputs, Tilt Adjustment, HDR, Built-In Speakers by James Larson

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Absolutely gorgeous.

I have used monitors in the 20-24 inch range for many years and have never used larger monitors. I finally decided to grow up. You know the saying, "Go big or go home?" I had several criteria: It had to be 4K. It had to be over 24 inches. It should have been an IPS panel. , and Asus, and began to think about how it would be. I pulled the trigger thoughtfully; LG was cheapest as others cost 1K+. It got here, I unpacked it, attached the stand and base, put it on the table, flopped down in the chair and my reaction was like this. . "Holy cow, what have I done?" I was struck by the size of this thing. It's practically a 4K TV (it comes with a remote control, btw). I plugged it into my desktop, booted up my machine and was amazed; it was so clear, bright and. . . BIG. My Windows desktop has never looked so good. No matter how big it is, sitting at a table is not a problem. You get used to that quickly. I connected my devices to it. It has 4 HDMI and display ports as well as USB-C so at the moment I have a desktop, laptop and Xbox One connected to it as well as spare ports (note: two of the HDMI ports 4K/30 Hz and two 4K/ 60Hz). It has built-in speakers, which aren't great, but they're good enough for what they are; The sound is clear, only the bass is missing. It took me about a day to get used to it and I'm hooked. What you need to know: This is an all-purpose display, a do-it-all, a master of nothing but a "good enough" display. If you're a high-end PC gamer who needs refresh rates above 60Hz, look elsewhere, this isn't one of those fancy 144Hz gaming displays; FreeSync is not supported. If you're a PC gamer familiar with 60Hz (60fps is still fine for most of us) then you'll be fine; This item is perfect for PS4 and Xbox One. It also says "HDR" on the packaging, but be aware that this is the "fake" HDR that many of today's more affordable 4K displays have. Problem is, this thing's constant brightness isn't high enough for true HDR resolution, but fake things can look good. If you're looking for a gigantic, high-resolution general-purpose display for work and play. , then this must be taken into account. Be careful, you can screw it up and never use anything smaller again.
