Review on πŸ“ EVERT Contour Gauge Replication Tool by Shawn Xayamonty

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Durable and works well; can be contoured up to 2 " and 3/8 " deep

Seems to work well and is as described. However if you don't need the full depth you can buy something very similar at the big orange and blue stores for ten bucks which is a lot cheaper and I see other similar sized contour gauges for less. online (although online shopping can be unreliable if you can't check first). This is a contour sensor. To use it, push all the pins, then push them against a piece of wood and the pins will take the shape of the tree. Then draw it on paper and you can measure what you need. Or you can transfer it to another piece of wood and cut the piece to exactly match the piece of wood you measured with the contour gauge. It's 10 inches long. The pins cover a distance of just over 9 3/4 inches. Then it is 5 inches wide and can measure up to 2 3/8 inches deep. It has 16 sheets per inch. The 2 3/8" gauge depth seems to justify the higher price. The aforementioned $10 10" version that sits on the shelves of major stores may be as little as 1 3/16" deep. The thickness is less than two ordinary boards! This one can be up to 2 3/8" deep. What I used this for: I was repairing exterior rot around doors and used it to measure the width of the lumber used around the frames (some are non-standard gauges and some are custom widths.) This works well and I was able to profile, trace and get the measurements for the trim and frame around the doors to be able to build a replacement piece of PVC wood for the bottom few inches of each door frame and trim region I was also able to profile the door jamb and for the trim that overlaps the door jamb I was able to trace the contour and get an exact fit for the replacement trim piece cut out I decided to measure the pickguard when I replaced the piece of wood paneling with plastic. For example a quarter turn could be 3/4 or 11/16 and I could use that for an accurate measurement instead of by eye. This was useful when the trim was beveled at the corners and the top and bottom needed replacing, but the top didn't rot. facilitated my very practical project. It definitely saved me the hassle of measuring and potentially saved me a trip to the store because I measured correctly the first time and got the right size wood. Tracking the shape of the pins seems fine. Of course, when I press on the pins with a pencil, they move like any other contour sensor. So follow a little. It doesn't matter and the pins really stay in place. For example, when I take an outline, I shake this thing like crazy, the shaking doesn't move the pins. This contour gauge seems easy to use and quite durable. If you want to get a profile of things up to 9 3/4 inches long at the top and 2 3/8 inches deep, you can do that.
