This TDS meter is ideal for testing reverse osmosis water to ensure the membrane is still working properly. I have had this unit for a few years now and use it every 6 months for this purpose when I change the sediment and carbon filters in my reverse osmosis system. The membrane cartridge in a reverse osmosis system is the most expensive part to replace and most of them are designed to last 2-5 years. But how do you know when it's time to replace the diaphragm? Do you play it safe and just swap it out after two years, or do you work "quick and easy" and squeeze the full 5 years out of it? Well, a TDS meter will tell you exactly how well your diaphragm is performing. If you replace the sediment and activated carbon filters every 6 months as planned, you will extend the life of your expensive membrane cartridge. And 5 years is *not* the upper limit. My last one lasted almost 7 years because I check it with a TDS meter every 6 months when I change the filter. There is no reason to replace the membrane when it can still remove 75-80% of the dissolved solids in your tap water. There are some good websites that explain the testing procedure in detail and it is very simple.
