Review on High-Torque Starter Proform 66268 by Mike Rice

DO NOT BUY - CHINESE SIGN!

I ordered one of these from Summit Racing in March 2011. Put it on an '81 Chevy K10 with a Goodwrench engine almost there. There were some flywheel clearance issues that required a flexplate replacement. Had to take this starter to a machine shop to grind .100" off the mounting plate to get proper clearance. The guy at the shop said the starter wasn't working properly. He was right. The clutch/spring on the pinion shaft has broken off. It probably caught on the flywheel and broke off - my fault - admittedly. However, what is NOT my fault is that it is a Taiwan made starter assembly. Trust me you will NOT find any replacement gear for him. Yes, this is a Delco PG260 TYPE, one of many types. Aluminum cone, solenoid (2 screw solenoids - try to find one) and anchors of all kinds of odd balls. Manufactured by UniPoint in Taiwan and stamped "3041". If you search the internet you will eventually find that this starter was made to replace Mercruiser Marine inboards with GM and Volvo engines. Go to the Unipoint website and you will see that the only thing they do for this in spares is the brush assembly - no gearing. So I emailed ProForm about 36 hours ago - no response. So I called, got put on hold, then the guy who answered said the 'guy' who could possibly help me with this wasn't coming back to the office for 4 days; Thank you goodbye. I think they just want to tell you that you need to buy another starter. If you could get a replacement gear it would cost almost half the cost of a starter. You can't get parts for this thing.
