Review on πŸ”’ Dorman 924-705 Shift Interlock Solenoid: A Reliable Solution for Smooth Shifting by Josh Long

Shift Lock Solenoid

My Alero had trouble shifting from park to drive/reverse all the time and when it went below zero it wouldn't shift at all. I investigated the causes and found that the problem was almost always the shift lock solenoid. This part is easily accessible and has even been replaced by Alero for the do-it-yourselfer. Removing the gear knob for access is very simple: with the engine off, apply the emergency brake, shift into low gear, pry the clip open. on the front of the shift knob and the knob will pop out. Pull the cover slowly as it has 2 wires, 1 for the gear position indicator and 1 for the traction switch. Carefully separate the wires. Use a long bladed screwdriver to pry both ends of the power magnet and disconnect the wire from it. A little grease on the ends of the new solenoid will make it easier to insert. Replacing this part changed the world. I wish I had done this a few years ago. Once again Dorman have supplied a well fitted and performing aftermarket part.
