My kid loves to crush with this thing. Place it high up to empty the bin, roll it under you, have a party. As for flipping the cans - when you crush them the "hammer" is completely flat - so if it hits the can, even at a slight angle, the can will pop out and spin in the basket (this only happens when there are 1 or 2 doses left in the hopper) . The glass then lands on its side and you have to fiddle for a second to get it right again. It allows you to go into zen mode and just crush, crush, crush. because you bang a few Big Scream. If a designer is reading this my advice would be to put your lip on the hammer/plunger so the can to be crushed can't pop out vertically. Want to crush banks? Take it. Destroy banks. kids LOVE this.
