Why am I saying this item is a necessary safety requirement? And please note that I am using my specific Terra Trike experience. However, this point applies to all bike/trike configurations. Why?. I rode my bike a long time before I switched to the Terra Trike, and many years ago, in college, on a Schwinn Paramont outfitted with all the Campagnolo gear, on a sunny, clear day in Denver, Colorado, in traffic, i found myself being hit from behind inch again dropping my chain, in traffic the dropped chain got stuck and it was a hill so i braked quickly and stopped unexpectedly and the passenger in the front seat in the car just behind I grabbed the steering wheel and steered the car to avoid hitting me because the driver was looking to the left. So this is important, especially in urban bike/tricycle conditions. so keep reading. One of the "problems" of many gear combinations, like in 27, on a bike, and especially a tricycle, is that you end up in extreme front derailleur movement plus extreme rear derailleur movement plus improper chain tension and sheer chain length ends. . When you put everything together, you can easily drop the chain from your face and the smallest chainring. Especially on a tricycle with a triple chainring and a much longer chain than a bicycle and two pairs of idler gears to allow your chain to "rear". In this configuration, a small misalignment can cause you to slightly knock the chain off the innermost and smallest front sprocket when shifting hard and fast. unravel/unravel the chain and then bring the chain back to one of the chainrings to allow you to move forward. Especially when you had to go FAST on the smallest chainring because the traffic light had switched on the city street. . Or you had to upshift abruptly (smaller chainring) because you really didn't have room to accelerate to higher speeds on an uphill climb with three small kids roaming in front of you on a busy bike lane. Note. I was a kid once, so I don't complain about them without learning and realizing that you won't fall in front of other riders on the DC Mount Vernon bike path on a crowded summer Sunday. Drop the chain and it could save you from injury. And in my case, NEVER drop the chain as I have it installed for over 5000 miles of city driving. Brakes will lead if you let your derailleur/shift cable fail. But until you can check and adjust your transmission, it gives you the best "margin of error/cheap insurance" and you might need that in a situation like riding down the city street in traffic where you absolutely can't use your bike or a tricycle because you just threw off the chain from the smallest and innermost front link. Because you can STOP abruptly if a car or other motorcyclist is coming from behind you. Yes I know you can slide forward with the ratchet in your rear cog/cassette. But what if you're standing on a hill or you really need to move because of a green light ahead? And it's really not a very good place. So the relatively low price of this item can at least save you from being embarrassed by another cyclist making a nasty comment or a nasty driver leaning on a car horn. Injure yourself, potentially seriously, if you are hit from behind by a motorcyclist or car because your chain fell and you came to an abrupt stop. So now I look at it as a security element.
