I bought this primarily to determine how much portable generator I would need to power my house in the event of a power outage. I've been using this for over a year and a half now and it's been interesting to see what effects all my different devices produce at different times of the year. I have a base load of about 500 watts all the time (even in the middle of the night when all normal stuff is off). With normal daily activities we stay between 1-6 kW. Since I have a 4500w electric water heater, when hot water is running my house jumps into the 5-6k range. The highest reading I have ever seen in my home was 13,000 when the washing machine takes hot water and the electric clothes dryer is working. Despite all the electricians trying to sell me a 20kW or larger generator to power my whole house, this unit gave me the confidence to buy a much smaller generator and just not do laundry during a power outage . This device easily pays for itself by saving the purchase of a smaller generator.
