Unit arrived undamaged on the outside but inside there is a bronze bearing on the vertical shaft which has come loose and is slipping down causing the gear to lift the press to be blocked which is probable the case would be the lift gear teeth cracking or breaking when the lever was forcibly tightened. The repair required disassembly of the assembly, reinstallation of the bearing, and fastening with epoxy. Also, the set screw that causes the shaft to rotate and pulls the press away from the meat tray needed adjustment as it had to be tightened and secured with blue Loctite to keep it in place. The unit was then tested, relubricated with white lithium and reassembled. Now it works like a champ and the burgers pop nicely. Bearing looseness was probably caused by improper installation or pressure during shipping. If you aren't interested or can't fix it I would skip this purchase. Reading other reviews I suspect others have had crashes due to the same issues. It's a good block when it works properly. It's easy to use, clean and reliable. It can press foods other than beef burgers as I just made pork stuffed burgers that went great with turkey sandwiches. I definitely recommend this device.
