It "grows " on me

I put it under the front door rug to give it that layered look that everyone is wearing these days. It was great! Unfortunately, small plants and mold started to grow on it. I'm not sure why. I've never had anything like this on my patio. I've just washed it again and I'm hoping it looks better but I'm afraid there's no hope.
