This mat keeps the rug in place. Very easy to use. However, I was very surprised to see how thin it is. So don't buy this if you're looking for more under-the-rug cushions. That's about the thickness of two sheets of cardboard. I've included a photo for reference of the thickness and size of the plumb line. The mesh is very dense and is especially ideal if you have a hard/rough backed rug that tends to push through many other mats I've bought off the shelf that use the traditional #mesh pattern with large have gaps. The thickness also allows you to tuck or double up the lining if you get a larger size and don't want to cut it off for some reason (although you still don't get padding :). I bought an 8x10 wood floor mat. I would get it again.
