Spitting out boiling water

After removing that giant label through trial and error, I looked forward to using this tin when my tomatoes were done. It has to be higher to allow an inch of water above the jars and when I used the liter jars today the lid didn't close well and the water splattered everywhere. I had to drain some of the boiling water but it still splattered and messed up my glass oven and floor. So I poured more water and turned off the heat and that helped some but what really helped was putting 4 heavy pot holders on the lid to make it heavier. okay, right? A light lid isn't the best option for a tin can, and this thing spits so badly that I'll order something else tonight (maybe back to those cheap, ugly enameled tin cans). My last one is 20 years old and was ugly but nice to use. This one cost a lot more and was nothing short of a pain to use. Canning is quite difficult and time consuming, so I don't want to struggle with my gear. Sigh.
