Review on meross Smart Garage Door Opener: Apple πŸšͺ HomeKit, Alexa, Google Assistant Compatible, No Hub Required by Giles Lacoste

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Good hardware, easy to set up and works well with Apple HomeKit

Easy to interface with our 17 year old Genie garage door opener. However, I had no interest in attaching the Meross module to a door lock drive head from the ceiling in the middle of the garage. The Meross smart opener now offers instant contact closure, as does the Genie push button wall control that sits along the side front door from our house to the garage. So why not install a Meross module right next to this button station and run it parallel to the button terminals with the existing pair of wires to the door opener powerhead. It wasn't as easy as I had hoped because I had to add a nearby 120VAC outlet to plug in the USB adapter that powers the Meross module. But now the Meross is closer to the WiFi router in the house and you can easily observe the status LEDs on the Meross module. Door to the Meross module. Our top door is made of steel clad panels, so I installed the sensor magnet above the door on an aluminum bracket and attached it to the aluminum with non-magnetic stainless steel screws to reduce magnetic field distortion. I wanted to see a large gap between the sensor and magnet to accommodate the somewhat sloppy guide rollers in the door rails, but still have high sensitivity ie no fuzziness in the position feedback. I've been solving puzzles in the Meross app for a while. Trying to figure out how to get into the settings menu from their home screen. Finally, I noticed that the door icon in the top right corner has some tiny dark gray rectangles that you can click to bring up the setup screen. Is that supposed to be intuitive? It takes a bit of experimentation between the IOS Home app and the Meross app to understand what is controlled and configured by each app's capabilities. I expect they'll eventually work well together once you get rid of the redundant notifications they generate for every portable iOS device you choose to use.

Pros
  • Great for a small home
Cons
  • Not bad
