A Guide for Drilling with Added Accuracy

This drill guide is a great tool to have on hand for any kind of drilling and not just stair rails. There are times in general woodworking where you can get away with estimating your 90° and 45° pilot holes but this handy little block ensures that you get a more accurate hole without much extra hassle. Although it is best to clamp it down, I found that just steadying it with my hand while drilling was fine for most 90° holes, especially on the smaller drill sizes. The 30° and 45° guides are definitely easier with the help of a bar or spring clamp especially when using the larger drill bits but it's easy enough to see what works once you drill a couple of holes. The 4 hole sizes accommodate the common drills sizes that you'll most likely use. The drills don't have to be the exact size but you'll hit your mark much more accurately using the correct sized drill for the hole. The block itself is made of solid aluminum and has a smooth anodized finish with very clear markings around the holes. There are also markings on all sides to allow you to align the relevant hole with reference lines on your piece. I've found this to be spot on so far including the angled holes. The V-groove is also handy for drilling at 90° on a curved surface such as a pipe but horizontal alignment is best done by marking the pipe from the edge of the block to the hole center you'll be drilling to ensure that you hit your mark when you drill. There are other versions of this block out there and this one is slightly higher priced but the quality of the build appears very solid. Considering how useful this guide is, I'd definitely recommend it for any tool kit or workshop setup. I'm finding that I'll even use this in situations where I would previously have simply estimated the drilling angle for non-critical assemblies. Worthy of 5 stars.

Pros
  • The all-metal design is resistant to wear and tear over time
