When turning clockwise, the piston extends, it is too big and damages the can. When the piston extends, the valve closes so it cannot be used. Turning the valve counter-clockwise opens the valve but pulls the piston up, leaving a damaged 134a can that will not stay open or fully closed. Luckily I had a self sealing adapter and they worked with the new can.
