It seems to be nothing, I haven't used it on the track yet. I did a setup test with 2 cranks. The first fit was on Shimano XT Hollow Tech and they felt pretty loose. There is a decent gap between the ends of the boots and the crank. I also just ordered a Raceface Turbine Cinch crank and expected it to fit like a glove. It fits better but there are some gaps at the ends. It's not as bad as Shimano cranks, but still there. As others have said, debris will come in. Perhaps heating to shrink would be a good solution if the material is compressible. You can always glue or shrink the top. Also, it looks like it will take a hit before my cranks will fire up. Helps with resale value in the future.
