Review on Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO Open Studio Headphones - High-Quality Sound for Professionals by En En Shiu ᠌

What did I pay for? This product is a failure.

I will not talk about the design flaws and the comfort of this model on the head, but I will talk about the most important thing - the sound. The upper case of the range is very strongly pulled up, and the middle one is failed, which is why the headphones simply cut the ear. Correctly mixed compositions have an overabundance of sibilants, and vocal works sound as if the performers sing in falsetto, and always. Of course, the detail at high frequencies is even excessive (on some old digitized recordings of Scorpions and Queen, annoying high-frequency artifacts are strongly audible, which, in theory, should not be heard), but why is it needed if it is impossible to listen to headphones. I very much doubt the suitability of these ears as monitor ears (I was especially amused by the inscription on the box "reference phones for mastering") because the mixed compositions will be with a lot of errors. These headphones require an amplifier with a tone-compensated volume control, because at low volumes the bass component almost completely disappears in the sound. True, given that such amplifiers belong to a slightly different class and price category, using them in conjunction with these ears becomes simply pointless. I myself connected these ears to my ASUS Essence STU and it seems to me that even this amplifier is a bit too much for them. listening. I consider this model extremely unsuccessful, the price of which is very high. I handed over my copy back under warranty based on the cod of the left membrane.

Pros
  • Quality materials (acoustic plastic cups and their metal holders), solid twisted wire (at least visually). Light weight. In sound: Enveloping, rather deep and legible bass with good attack, detailed lower mids, ultra-detailed upper register
Cons
  • The most important joint of these ears in the sound! The tonal and timbre balance of the DT 990 PRO is severely disturbed, which is why the sound of the headphones is unnatural, very harsh and tiring. Weak sensitivity and low power, due to which the headphones are easily overloaded with an excess signal. In my case, already at 60% volume, a crackling of the membrane in the left ear was detected, which, with a subsequent increase in volume, simply hammered the entire bass. The assembly is mediocre (the cup holders, at the attachment points with an arc, stagger in different directions, the 6.35 jack adapter barely twisted onto the regular 3.5 plug, also staggering from side to side, the speakers in the cups are fastened with latches and not screws, ear pads are harsh and press behind the ears. The price for them is clearly too high!
