Review on Deal Alert: General Tools PNG1 Combustible 🚨 Gas Detector (Discontinued by Manufacturer) - Limited Stock Available! by Steven Harmon

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Not very sensitive - household sensors and alarms

This rating applies to both the General Tools and Instruments PNG1 and the Mastech MS6310. I was looking for a detector to find a leak in my RV's propane system. Verdict: In my testing, Mastech was easier to use, more responsive, and much more responsive. The Mastech MS6310 is worth the extra $13 in my opinion when it comes to safety issues and costs associated with gas leaks. Read on for more details. GT&I PNG1: This device came in a nice blister pack with 2 AA batteries and legible instructions. It appears to be made out of decent quality plastic for regular home use, but it's definitely not a high-end retail product. In testing it was easy to use but was slow to respond so leak detection was a slow process. On the first day of testing there was no wind outside and only one of the 3 leaks was found. On the second day, in winds of 4mph, he couldn't even spot a large leak. I returned this product for a refund. Mastech MS6310: This device was packaged in a nice retail box, but obviously intended for the Chinese market and covered in Chinese characters. The box contained the device, carrying case and instructions, but no batteries. The instructions were legible but had spelling/word errors typical of Chinese products. The quality of the device itself was good for DIY and home use. The performance of this gas detector was far superior to the PNG1. Mastech issued a leak alert almost immediately and found 2 other very small leaks that PNG1 could not detect even if I knew where they were. He also found all 3 leaks even in 4mph winds. The unit has a sensitivity knob that you can adjust until the noise stops. So if there is residual gas in the area, you can lower the sensitivity to find the leak. I have saved this product for future use. Note. Both devices require a few minutes to warm up for maximum sensitivity.
