If you have an LG front-load washing machine, you'll need it on both lanes (so you'll have to order two). They're pretty neat in the sense that they also help eliminate potential kinks in the lines leading to the washing machine as they attach directly to the back of the washing machine and have a 90 degree bend to them. The hoses are then mounted perpendicular to the flame arrestors. They reduce water hammer. If you don't know what a hammer is, it's the uncomfortably loud pulsing that occurs as the valves open and close as the washing machine adds water to the tub. It can also damage the water pipes as the reciprocating movement of the pipes causes shock which can damage the pipes enough to cause a leak. When installing the LG washer, I also pulled out part of the drywall (installation panel to access and close the hole) and did my best to attach the copper wires to the frame. Of course, the hammer still comes, but at least the pipes are fixed in this part of the wall cavity. If you can connect a hose to a faucet, you can easily install it. Just remember to tighten by hand, not with a tool. The upper section contains a piston with multiple seals that keep air behind. This absorbs the water hammer when switching on and off. Why three stars, you might ask? Well, while it will reduce knocking, it won't eliminate it entirely. Keep in mind that in my house, where the plumbing is owned by a bank, the water pressure is 84psi (tested with a pressure gauge), which is definitely too high. I need to take the pressure off in the future. Lower pressure may result in complete elimination of bumps, although that's just conjecture on my part. Another disadvantage is the need to replace the flame arrestors, since the piston wears out over time (especially if, as in our case, your washing machine runs almost every day). After disassembling the old one, I couldn't see (and touch with a thin screwdriver) the piston, unlike the new one where the piston is clearly visible and is next to the hole. On a whim, I decided to order a larger Sioux Chief. Flame arrestor containing only the piston part. Unfortunately it was 1/2" and I assumed the hole was 3/8". The adapter didn't fix the size difference, so the 660-HB either doesn't have a 3/8" hole or the adapter is the wrong size. I'll be in touch with Sioux Chief to find a solution if possible. That aside There can be compatibility issues with any of these, but that's probably another point to consider, however the 660-HB should at least help with the swaddling, if not eliminate it.Recommended, with caveats.
