Review on NETGEAR Centria Gigabit Wireless WNDR4700 by Jason Hill

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Finally a finished product, lightning fast and easy to use!

Setup: With the default settings, it took less than 2 minutes to unpack, plug in and run. It's amazing how easy it was to set up. I then went back to a higher security configuration and bought a 2TB Western Digital Red Sata HD separately, and again very easy and not time consuming. This is the first product I've seen where wireless is as fast and reliable as an Ethernet connection. In everyday use my wife connects to 5GHz, I connect to 2.5GHz and we stream to our PS3 via Ethernet. So far we haven't noticed any slowness or even need to restart the device at all. Speed: The upload speed of our Time Warner cable with our old Netgear 318 firewall/router was about 5 Gbps, and we had to cycle it and the cable box at least once a month. Without changing anything other than the WNDR4700, our TW download speed is now 14.5 Gbps and we haven't had to turn anything off in over 6 months. I have a friend who travels for a living and he says our internet speed is the fastest he's seen. He wirelessly downloaded a 6GB movie to his iPad in an hour. He said it's three times faster than anywhere else. It happened so fast that he thought something was wrong, but the film ended just fine. Removal: I installed this in our basement, 3 stories down, with a 12" concrete block surrounding it. However, I walked 400 feet down the street from my house with my laptop before I lost the signal. Our 2700 square foot home with 3 car garage. We have full signal strength everywhere we go. I purchased a Western Digital RED 3TB drive separately. It was more expensive than the GREEN drive, but the failure rate is close to 0. I bought the 3TB knowing that the 4700 only supports 2TB by default. Plug it in, log into the 4700, format the drive and start copying data. As a test, I formatted a 3TB drive on my laptop. Since then the drive has worked flawlessly! Netgear released a firmware update to support 3TB, but I'm happy with the performance and far from enough storage space, so I'll leave enough of that for now. My recommendation: BUY NOW!
