Review on πŸ“· Venus Laowa 4mm f/2.8 Circular Fisheye Lens for Micro Four Thirds (MFT) Mount by Victoria Shaw

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Very good value for money

I would call this Laowa lens a "real" fisheye lens. At just 4mm, the focal length is so short that you get an (almost) full circle with only a tiny part cropped at the top and bottom. And of course the coverage, a ridiculous 220 degrees, is the same in all directions because it's a circle. Round images aren't to everyone's liking, but I prefer a round fisheye over a full frame because you've got straight lines that curve unnaturally anyway, and it looks weird in a rectangle. The 220-degree coverage has downsides, not the least of which is trying to keep your hands off the photo. But it turns out that if you crop the picture a bit you get a perfect circle, no hands in the photo, and you still have more than 180 degrees. An extra step, but it only takes a second in Photoshop. Sharpness isn't bad, especially at f/5.6 once you remove the chromatic aberration necessary to get the best results with all types of fisheye. (Some cameras can do this automatically, mine can't.) Note that the lens can be focused beyond infinity. Even if you set it and forget to focus, it's worth doing a quick test to find the optimal focus distance. The lens is all metal and at 5.6 ounces feels surprisingly heavy for something so small. I'm not a mechanical engineer so can't comment on the build quality but it looks solid. Defects? The lens has a metal cap with an old-fashioned felt handle, so don't hold the lens by the cap! I wouldn't recommend this lens for "defishing" either, as straightening a fisheye image results in a large loss of image quality, and starting from a round image you have to shift those pixels even further. just a round fish for m43 and for the price i find it very consistent. How can you go wrong with a lens that comes in a box that says 'New Fun'?

Pros
  • An exceptionally wide 210Β° field of view combined with a circular fisheye design produces a highly distorted image for creative purposes as well as the ability to blend images for full 360Β° panoramas.
Cons
  • boring packaging
