TomTom NO.: In-Dash Navigation

Firstly, yes I'm one of those people who doesn't like using my phone for navigation . I always have music or podcasts in my car and I don't want my sat nav to speak through the same speaker as Rslash. It's harder to hear. So I like having a dedicated GPS with my own little dedicated speaker. I have had a Garmin for many years. For example, I got this thing when I got my first car in 2013. The Garmin lived a long, happy life before this winter, and in all that time I've only had one complaint about it, and that was the lack of hands-free voice control. So I would either have to risk an accident or stop if I had to enter or change the route. It's 2021 and many of these devices have voice control on board. But most of them are really expensive (tl;dr, BUY ONE OF THEM) Tom Tom wasn't. There's a reason for that. Look, GPS peripherals are quirky. They always have been. They probably always will. So I'm pretty tolerant of their occasional little quirks (Garmin had them too), but the "quirks" I've experienced from this idiotic bot and their clueless engineering team make this product far from production-ready. It's almost ridiculous. It would be if I wasn't plowing a 2000lb rocket at the same time. Tom Tom's quirks include (but are not limited to) such gems as: 1. He doesn't understand anything I tell him. My best luck with this thing was when I programmed the addresses, gave them VERY SIMPLE names, and told it to get me to the simple names. This works about 50% of the time.2. He knows the commands he knows. And NO alternate version of these commands should ever be spoken. For example, if she hears "stop voice instructions" and you say "stop navigation," she won't understand what you're talking about. Speaking of. THERE ARE NO EASY WAYS TO STOP ANY THING FROM NAVIGATION. I had to keep typing to turn off the navigation. And you really have to dig. You can turn off the voice prompts (e.g. she's finally going to shut up), but she NAVIGATION NEXT. Not just until you reach your destination, but after you get there, on your next trip. etc. Until you figure out how to turn it off, she keeps telling you that you're going in the wrong direction. Forever and ever. Yes, I understand that placing a "stop navigation" button on the navigation screen itself (or, you know, even available one screen back, or even a "stop navigation" voice command) is not an intuitive feature. But just for fun, why don't you try my crazy idea?4. It might be a setting, but by default it doesn't tell me what time it is. No, there is no clock on the screen. What is this beep? During the pandemic I traveled a lot over long distances. I want to know when I'm crossing time zones without having to look at multiple screens. I even asked her what time it was a couple of times and she just said "sorry I don't understand" - I'm not sure why I expected her to know. So right now we have a navigation screen with no stop button, no time display, and a navigator that's about as useful as a dumb kid eating pasta.5. THINGS GET REALLY DANGEROUS HERE. Preferences or route detours will not be respected. GENERAL. I can't drive on the freeway after dark. I can't see well in the dark to merge quickly. I also try to avoid freeways for shorter drives because I see double when I look over my left shoulder, which makes merging with the mirror a problem and not as safe. The only option I have is to avoid the freeways. I install it when I need it. I don't choose to take the fastest route, and this idiot thing has been driving me down the highway on these trips IN THE INTEREST OF FIND THE FASTEST WAY. Sometimes she seems to remember to avoid the freeway and then she forgets about it completely and puts me on the freeway. At the end of the ride, I see that avoidance is still selected. But then again. A child eating pasta. Touch screen sensitivity and accuracy are acceptable. That's how he earned the half star I gave him. In general, have you ever been in a car with a shotgun navigating a cranky senior who has no idea how to get anything and doesn't listen? anything you shout in their ear? Welcome to the world of Tom Tom Go. listen guys If you need voice control, invest in voice control.
