They were not designed for 1/2 inch fabric but many people are interested in using them on 1/2 inch hardware. modify them for this application, otherwise it's really hard work, they're just too big I filed down the jaws on both sides - remember the clamps are all aluminum so the jaws are a lot deeper than they need to be . Safety wire, hog rings, plastic wire ties to my 1/2 inch wire mesh cage to keep rats off my tomatoes have all been a headache, but these modified tongs and J-clamps work great.
