I think it's normal. I used the wooden spoon they had and watched a few YouTube videos on how to use each tool properly and after about 20 minutes with the hook knife (which wasn't originally that sharp) and the roughing knife BOTH tools had a defect . on the edge! Even after using the sling, he still had a stain. Save yourself the heartache and order some soft basswood and smash a wooden spoon in the fireplace. And if you're serious about carving, save some money and buy a Flexcut parts knife and a roughing knife. This is "normal" for beginners, but I'm a bit skeptical
