Just Terrible: Water Pumps

Aquaria's DC pump idea isn't that terrible but when we start adding additional factors to items like skimmers we add another item that might not work that way Setup much more complicated. In this case the Q/C on the pumps and controllers is terrible. After studying this topic for a month with Simplicity, a new pump, various tests, settings and finally diagrams with my Apex, I came to the conclusion that the pump and controller are rubbish. Strictly speaking, Chinese-made garbage. The included controller has a power rating (current draw) that ranges from 9 to 20 for mine. This means that the pump runs at different speeds when it wants to. This will cause the head pressure in the skimmer to unintentionally drop or overflow, despite any adjustments we might try. This is a problem with DC in general and with quadratic methods of current control, not sine like German pumps. With an air conditioner, the pump is either on or off. As we "lose" the ability to control pump speed, we gain stability, which is fundamental to a total head skimmer. D/C skimmers are a fad and another point of failure. Similar to air adjustment, this is another issue that complicates the skimmer. I need installed air for an installed pump and skimmer so as not to turn the skimmer into a longitudinal study of underwater hydrodynamics at the expense of my aquarium becoming a bayou. For a company that calls itself Simplicity, it has done the exact opposite. I take the AquaMaxx, tried and tested like many years ago with my 200g weight. I wish I could get a refund for this as it is now a $200 memorial to wasted money.

Pros
  • Great Design
Cons
  • Could have chosen a newer model
