I was able to fit the unit into the jack stand and run a wire to the right tail light under the bumper, just enough wire. Run the cable to the battery in the car and exit through the hood, lock the cable to the battery and hide the fuse in the battery compartment. When I'm ready to tow, open the jack compartment and thread the wire harness through the hole on the jack cover, boom! Installation time 3 hours, 2 men. My guess is that by installing it per the instructions you're just leaving the wiring harness tucked somewhere under the bumper and exposed to the elements. It's a good plug and play nut, no 35 minute install and some skill is required
