Review on 🧭 Enhanced Magellan eXplorist 210 Waterproof Hiking GPS (Discontinued by Manufacturer) by Kyle Ross

Great for geocaching!

*** Updated 11/11/2008 - The listed price of $387 at the time of this update is ridiculous! Go somewhere else to buy this item! *** I bought this item over a month ago and have no complaints. When I first started researching which GPS device to buy, I was looking for an exceptionally good geocaching device. However, as I continued to search, I began thinking about buying a more advanced device that could be used for both in-car navigation and geocaching. This approach has been narrowed down to the Garmin GPSMap series (much more expensive than the eXplorist 210)! However, the more I researched, the more I realized the limitations of these more advanced and expensive wearable devices. Their disadvantages seemed similar to those of early PDAs: limited internal storage, limited use of external storage, problems with operating systems and PC connectivity, expensive add-on software, and color screens that reduced battery life at an alarming rate. Because of these shortcomings, I decided to purchase the Geocaching eXplorist 210 and it did not disappoint. It's good to have detailed maps, but when geocaching and off the main routes, a base map works great. The geocache manager menus and software are very intuitive and easy to learn, and the only reception problem I had was in a dense forest on a cloudy day with heavy snowfall. Even then I still had a signal. So if you're looking for a great geocaching device, I definitely recommend the eXplorist 210; However, if you're looking for a combination of autonavigation and geocaching, I recommend waiting a few years for the "growing pains" to pass. .

Pros
  • Great for a small home
Cons
  • Questionable purchase for the elderly
