I have used old school style crimping tools all my life but have always found them a bit cheap and as I sometimes need to crimp fittings professionally I decided to try something better. I wanted them to like it and gave them a chance, but I didn't go. First, they don't actually crack. They have a ratchet function, but it doesn't increase or improve your leverage or crimping power. All the power comes from the pivot points. The ratchet feature only locks the tool in the semi-closed position until you close it fully and the ratchet unlocks. This can be very frustrating when trying to fit a fitting into a tool because as soon as you start squeezing the handle to make sure it's properly seated, it will jam so you can't open it again to close the fitting move. By the way, about the location of the fittings. If you don't do this perfectly, the crimp won't wrap tightly around the wires. Both me and my work partner came to the same conclusions after trying them for a few months. I've had much better results with old school crimping tools. I'll throw them away and switch back.
