I prefer tatting because I've covered the basics (DS, Pico and Rings) using videos I found online in could learn in a few minutes. The shuttles are more frustrating for me, but I'll try again as some templates/tutorials seem easier with shuttles. I have two of these and two shamrocks. There are two main differences - with them you wind the thread on the spool. Each hook comes with two spools and you can buy more. If you jump from project to project like I do, this way of winding filament is probably the best. Instead of using lots of extra hooks or cutting the current project off the hook and spooling new thread, just pull the spool out. With Clover shuttles you wind the thread directly onto the spool. I just explained why it's bad. Although it could be good. If you have extra shuttles or aren't jumping from one project to another, they will hold a little more filament. The second main difference is the tip of the shuttle. pointed plastic tip. This depends on preference. I find the tip on these much more useful than the plastic tip. This greatly simplifies the connection since the plastic-tipped shuttle forced me to use a separate tiny hook anyway. Less important but may be relevant to those which they use frequently = color and weight. These Aerlit shuttles come in a variety of colors, as do the individual spools, making it easy to mix and match to your liking. Clover Shuttles also come in a variety of colors, although it seems the pink and blue combination is the most common. Both are plastic and you can always find a way to adapt them to your look (I've seen some of them decoupaged). They are of comparable weight, although this one seems a little lighter than the Clover when loaded. Some might like the extra weight, others might like the lighter weight, so again just a preference, not a huge difference. Overall - if I had to do it again, would I buy them first and just add extra coils. I don't hate Clover shuttles, they just suit me better. If you're new to tatting and discussions between the shuttle and the needle, I'd advise using a needle, but if you try both and still decide you prefer needles, don't think you've spent money on it to have.
