Review on πŸ’» Samsung Chromebook 3, 11.6-Inches, 4GB RAM, 64GB eMMC Storage (Model XE500C13-K06US) by Bob Berry

Revainrating 3 out of 5

The cheapest 64GB Chromebook on the market.

I used this Chromebook for about a week before writing this review. So far I'm impressed with the value Samsung has brought to this device. The N3060 processor is great for my daily tasks. This Chromebook is able to stream videos at 1080p/60fps, load ad- and image-heavy websites relatively quickly, multitask without slowing down, and run Android apps/games well. For example, 3D games like Max Payne, GTA San Andreas, and Star Wars KOTR from the Google Play Store play fine with default settings (if you're interested in a controller, the DualShock 3 is compatible with this model). As for the general build quality, I have no complaints. The spill-resistant keyboard is comfortable to type on, the mouse pad is responsive, and the design of this laptop looks and feels more premium than the price suggests. The only downside I have with this laptop is the screen. Compared to my old Chromebook, the Acer Chromebook 11 (2016), you can't beat it. The Acer Chromebook's IPS screen has much better viewing angles and colors are more saturated. However, I wouldn't say the CB3's screen is bad. Colors are decent when you find the optimal viewing angle, and the anti-glare screen works well in brightly lit rooms. You can tilt the screen up to 30 degrees from the optimal viewing angle before colors are washed out. Also, I had no trouble running this Chromebook through a 1080p monitor. In the future, Samsung Chromebook 3 will support Linux with Crostini. You can switch this Chromebook to the Canary channel for now to test this feature. Unfortunately I couldn't get Linux to work due to assembly issues. I hope Google removes this feature in the future as 64GB of storage is optimal for installing many Linux apps. To wrap up this review, I would recommend this Chromebook to anyone looking to install both Linux apps (either using Crouton or Crostini) and Android apps on a Chromebook. With 50GB of usable internal storage, this Chromebook is a great device to use both online and offline. Benefits1. Good processor with 4 GB of RAM. anti-reflective screen3. Comfortable keyboard and responsive trackpad4. Less than $3,005. 8-10 hours of battery life6. Google Play is supported and Crostini (Linux apps in Chrome OS) is coming in the near future. Disadvantages1. Colors are washed out when the screen is tilted beyond the optimal range.2. Quiet Speakers*Update - 1.5 Months*Samsung Chromebook 3 officially supports Crostini Linux in Beta Channel. While I initially had a few issues installing Terminal on this Chromebook, the Linux apps work reasonably well. For example, the Libre Office package (Microsoft Office replacement for Linux) works very well and I haven't had any hiccups with it. The same goes for Filezilla, the Gimp photo editor, and GnuCash. However, when using Linux applications that rely on sound and video/graphics (Spotify desktop, VLC media player, watching videos via Firefox, playing games on Steam), the performance is quite slow and all these applications have audio issues (hoarse sound or lack thereof). As such, it still has a long way to go when it comes to replacing a dedicated Linux distro. If you are interested in a smoother Linux experience with this Chromebook, I would recommend installing Gallium OS and dual booting with chrx. I was able to run Counter Strike GO from Steam (with very low graphics) and the rest of the apps I was having trouble with in Crostini worked in Gallium.

Pros
  • 11.6 inch HD anti-glare display
Cons
  • Ok overall, but...
