This is not a gate for people who don't read instructions well (meπ€¦π»ββοΈ). No, the gate is not defective, the door must have a gap at the top, the screws MUST NOT be screwed into the sides of the gate and yes the gate will close and open properly when the nuts are tightened. When I decided to relax and read the instructions I was glad the gate was perfect π
