Bought 2 of these and they are great. My husband had a little trouble lining up the first one so it didn't auto close and you really had to slam it. But then he learned the second, and it was easier. It's attractive enough not to bother me and once you get the hang of it it can actually be done with one hand while holding a baby basket or laundry!

This is not a gate for people who don't read instructions well (me🤦🏻‍♀️). No, the gate is not defective, the door must have a gap at the top, the screws MUST NOT be screwed into the sides of the gate and yes the gate will close and open properly when the nuts are tightened. When I decided to relax and read the instructions I was glad the gate was perfect 😂

This gate was either bent or carelessly welded which left it sticking out more than an inch from the square and would not close at all. There doesn't seem to be any way to push it together to align it. The replacement option forces you to return the defective item. I'm currently awaiting an answer from someone to see if we can do something about the return without having to pay shipping which could be significant considering the gate is quite heavy. I never write reviews but I hate it.

Got it back together and found this hinge to be crooked and faulty as it should be flat against the bottom of the gate. We don't have stairs but we needed a very wide gate to get from the living room to the kitchen. We have a 47 inch arch that was difficult to find, a gate that was wide and short enough to easily walk through and hold our Yorkie.
