I used AWG 18 stranded wire; The spring-loaded hooks on the other end couldn't handle anything thicker. However, these connectors require a much thicker wire. 14 AWG might be easier to solder than the thinner 18 gauge wire I had to use. After tinning the ends, I stuck them through the inner pins (there is a cavity). My venerable Weller soldering station had to get pretty hot to get the contacts hot enough to fuse the test lead, pin and solder into a solid connection. After assembling the three parts (connector, inner pin, upper case) the end result was solid. The parts snapped firmly into place and the test lead was held securely. They can be repaired if necessary, making them a worthwhile investment.
