They are useful for penetrating standard carpeting. I bought the shorter ones and they are better suited to tile or hardwood with the included bases. The shorter ones were too short and stocky to ensure they hit the ground properly. Being taller and not as wide, with a narrower tip, it's pretty clear that the tip penetrated both the carpet backing and the upholstery. The shorter ones were not high enough to provide optimal insulation through standard tufted carpets. I doubt there was any penetration through the backing let alone the gasket. In any case, it is easy to install. You will need a 5mm Allen key. English hex keys are rounded inside the insert. The spikes are chrome plated and the bases are nickel plated as shown in the pictures. They are not black, but gray metallic.
