Review on Laptop Ethernet Dock: LENTION 3 USB Ports Hub with RJ45 LAN Adapter for MacBook Air/Pro, Chromebook, Windows - Expand Network Connectivity! by Mike Wieneke

Buyers beware, this device will not work on Surface Pro unless connected to another hub. :-(

I connected this to my Surface Pro's 1 power**) USB hub and then everything worked fine in the Surface Pro. -- It really baffles me that this was necessary because it basically renders it unusable for portable devices (which I think will be the main option when using this device)), but it suits my needs quite well ( I'm building a Batocera box out of an old Surface Pro, I can cram in as much hardware as I want). past life, and the only time adding a no-power hub between the device and the computer helped was when I used REALLY cheap (non-USB compatible) parts and spoofed the USB protocol (essentially the hub acts as a signal filter and can be more forgiving than a strictly compliant device). -- I wonder how cheap this device was. did. -- In the end, however, it serves my purpose and works (with the caveats above), so I give it 3*. -- If I wanted to buy it as a separate hub for more mobile use of my device, I would give it a 1* and return it. Other thoughts: It comes with a driver CD (what's that, 1998?) - obviously not useful for my use case (e.g. Batocera is Linux) - but I'm having exactly the same problems on Linux as I have on Windows (or even when booting from USB) - it works 100% fine IF plugged into another hub first (even without power); If it doesn't, it won't even power anything plugged into it. -- If you get a different result, your device may have a built-in USB hub. -- But if your device only has a USB port, this device probably won't work for you.

Pros
  • Handsfree
Cons
  • Very expensive
