Review on Topeak Super Tourist DX Trunk Rack with Side Bar for Disc Brake Bicycles by Nate Jenkins

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Everything is fine after two weeks of travel

So far it's working well. I have a road bike with disc brakes and probably don't need the extra clearance over a disc brake model - maybe I could do with the standard version. Essentially, this just moves the sides of the trunk (and the baskets hanging from it) outward about 3/4 of an inch. If anything, it can reduce the chance of parts or the contents of the basket interfering with the needles. I like how the rear support bar is angled backwards; This would also tend to keep the flex basket away from the rear wheel (this would be the perfect stand for the old used baskets I ended up replacing). I also like how the baskets hang from their own poles just below the surface. This makes it easier to use the luggage carrier bag and cases at the same time and – perhaps imaginatively – lowers the center of gravity when the cases are full. I use this rack with an Axiom trunk bag, Ortlieb rear roller and panniers. The frame's hollow tubes make it lightweight, but it still feels like it's strong enough. For fans of "quiet bikes” (I'm one of them) the hollow tubes really seem to vibrate and amplify the noise as the rear wheel rides over bumps. My only real issue with this product is that the mounting screws that came with the post do not match the solder thread pitch that the posts are designed to mount to my frame. This always seems to be the case, which is why I just decided to look for the right size screws at the hardware store.

Pros
  • Lots of positive emotions
Cons
  • Not bad, but...
