We have a 2007 Honda Pilot with over 140,000 miles and the check engine light comes on intermittently. We panicked and took it to the store. and they told us that one of the catalytic converters needed replacing, which would cost $2,000 including labor. I really didn't want to spend that much money because we're not even getting $2,000 for this car. The mechanic was nice and honest enough to let me know I can still drive it with no problems so he reset the check engine light for me and I picked the car up without changing the catalytic converter. Now my only dilemma was what to do. What to do if the check engine light comes on again? How do I know if this is the same catalytic converter warning or something new and more serious as the car is old and reaching its limit. After researching I first found out about an OBD2 scanner last year and bought a cheap one, but now I'm buying this one, which has a lot more features, better screen and buttons, for my wife's new car. It is so simple and easy to use that anyone who knows how to connect a USB port can use it. In fact, the most difficult thing is to find an ODB2 connector in your car that has nothing to do with this scanner. I had to get close to the ground to see it just above the gas pedal, but it has a matching groove on one side, so there's only one way to connect it. This OBD2 scanner is more advanced than the one I bought last year and has an on board monitor test, I/M readiness, EVAP tests and even an O2 sensor test. It's great to have this in your car just in case you see a check engine light so you know what the problem is before you take it to the shop and pay an hourly rate, not to mention you know if the mechanic is telling the truth or not (you might not get robbed for $$$). Would highly recommend to all car owners! Note that while the scan will work with the engine on, it will not clear the code and will not check the engine light when the engine is on. Therefore, it is better to use the scanner with the ignition on (two turns of the key) WITHOUT starting the engine. I hope that was helpful. and if so, please click on the helpful button below.
