Just turns off when not in use. When I use it it seems to work fine, but when I unplug the USB it eventually shuts down and I have to restart Win 10 for it to work temporarily. I updated all the drivers for this thing. Also, I absolutely hate how removing the USB cable pulls the entire card out of the slot if you're not VERY careful with it. It doesn't lock (which I've read is a common problem with the Expresscard 34 due to design differences, but that's the default.) The other card I lock is secure and can't be removed, but for people like me it can I don't find out what's going on there to keep it. Packaging and material is ok. And I didn't try to call tech support because I didn't care so they might be helpful. If you're using an IBM ThinkPad T420, I wouldn't recommend this product just for its reliability and potential data corruption.
