Our original Sharp Convection Carousel (R-930AK, manufactured April 1999) was great. Excellent performance in both microwave and convection modes. We had no problems or complaints. It worked fine until April 2017 when convection mode stopped working. 18 years of uptime and service. Expecting the same quality and value, we ordered the current new version from Sharp, essentially the exact same oven (but with a newer, more austere keyboard), now model number SMC1585BB (manufactured March 2017). The microwave worked well, but in convection mode the oven made a loud rumble, almost a faint grinding noise. This was only done in convection mode and it appears to have been a loose mount for the convection circulation fan. So we sent it back for a new replacement. When we received the replacement (manufactured in February 2017), three things immediately stood out: 1) The start button didn't work (how does a non-working start button pass quality control?). It didn't work in either microwave or convection mode. You could choose the time for the microwave or the temperature and time for the convection, you just couldn't start the oven. Sort of like a deal breaker. So you could choose how your food was cooked, you just couldn't cook it. 2) The platter started spinning as soon as the unit was plugged in and would not stop until the door was opened or the unit was unplugged. . Cooking was not possible, but the turntable kept turning. 3) The light in the oven was on all the time. He didn't switch off. In fact, it was enough to heat the top exterior surface of the oven to 146 degrees Fahrenheit at one point. Sharp was once an excellent product. But her day has come and gone. How do these bugs get past your QA team? The loud rumble in the air recirculation mode cannot be ignored. A non-functioning start button is not to be missed. It looks like their products are NOT checked by QA before shipping. It's pretty sad and maybe even dangerous. The original Sharp products were so good, excellent even. But they're not what they used to be. Their days are numbered and they will almost certainly disappear from the commercial landscape soon.
