The third time is magical

Ugh, cut the existing thermostat out of my freezer, checked all my voltages and whatnot with my multimeter and hooked up this new thermostat. Oops, bad solder joint on the "cooling side" of the terminals. The whole block just fell into the case before I even put the wire in. Pooh. Guess I'll have to order another one as my new freezer is now dead in the garage. Ordered a second unit to replace the faulty first, just turned on the 110VAC input and the display only showed meaningless characters. Nothing works without a readable display, or maybe I should learn to read Klingon. Also, the device sits there and clicks in and out and displays dots and lines. I'm thinking about trying the third block. I think. Update: Okay, I hooked up unit #3 with just the current and temp sensor. Wow, no nonsense! I made all the settings (which, by the way, were not standard). Then turned off the unit, connected two switched lines (hot/compressor), then turned it back on. Finally! Success! The block works exactly as expected after two more failed blocks. I'm giving one star because the first two pissed me off. My freezer has been running successfully as a 47F fridge for three days. Update: I spoke to the company that sold me two faulty units and they did their best to rectify the situation via email. I have already ordered the third (working) device and am satisfied with it. This way the company refunded me for two more purchases and I didn't have to re-label and return the packages. I changed my star rating from one to three because of the customer service I received. The unit has been running fine for five days now and I'm checking the temperature of the compressor and the unit itself with a laser thermometer just to make sure they aren't overloading and are fine. If I had gotten a good thermostat right away, I would have given it five stars and a shorter rating without a problem.

Pros
  • It actually reads in Fahrenheit.
Cons
  • I don't remember
