Review on πŸ”§ Precision Spoke Tension Measurement with the Park Tool TM-1: A Must-Have Tool for Bike Maintenance by Lild Zimmerly

Revainrating 5 out of 5

A good addition to any store

I received the Park Tool TM-1 tension meter, read the instructions and started using it straight away. I had an issue with a Mavic XC717 rim that I tested a couple of times, but after about 3000 miles the rim started cracking at the base of the nipples. Thinking I was over-tightening, I asked questions and got informed suggestions from other Revain customers who had considered the Park Tension Gauge, so I bought it. After checking the tension on the cracked Mavic rim, I found that it was too tight. . When assembling the new Mavic XC717, I made sure that the spokes were evenly tensioned. The tension on these spokes was easy to determine because the TM-1 came with a chart listing the tension readings for most spokes, including paddles. I was surprised at how easy the TM-1 was to use. I will update if there are any issues with the wheel but for now I would definitely recommend this tool to anyone looking to work on mounting or tensioning used or new wheels. Update 11/08/14, I am absolutely delighted with the effectiveness of this remedy. The Mavic XC717 I built with this tool is holding up very well. I've reground used wheels and this is the first tool I use to make all the spokes the same. This is an excellent starting point. The Park TM-1 is easy to use, accurate and very useful. Update 4/13/20, I've been using the Park tensiometer for a few years now and find it useful. It dawned on me that Park Tool had raised the price to an exorbitant $80+. I have found several other spoke tensiometers for much less at Revain such as the link below. There is a star deduction for the price increase. Three voltmeters: VGEBY1 at $46, Jeffzhang at $30, and Venzo at $39.

Pros
  • Very good value for money
Cons
  • Ugly packaging
