Inexpensive paddle, and I don't think it's carbon fiber

I was excited to get this paddle as a possible solution for another family member. On the positive side, it's relatively light and has rigid paddle surfaces. That said, I DON'T think this is carbon fiber. In your hand, the paddle shaft feels quite cool and metallic, so I suspect some kind of anodized aluminum to look like carbon fiber. For the price, it's not bad, but I chafe at what I think is false advertising. I did compare it with a more recognized paddle, my Aqua Bound Manta Carbon. That's not a 100% fair comparison as the Manta Ray has a larger paddle. Nonetheless, it definitely feels better in the hand, and I prefer the ribbed surface for better grip.I think the Oceanbroad paddle is less expensive than comparable department store paddles (with aluminum shafts), and it far exceeds the cheapie paddles included with some kayaks. But if you're really looking to enjoy this activity, it's probably worth saving up some more for an Aqua Bound/Bending Branches (same company), Werner, or even a nice Pelican paddle. This one would make a solid backup paddle if you carry one, but I know what I'm going to pick up as my primary. All that said, are you sure you want to buy a product that lies about what it is? I really don't think this is carbon fiber after comparing the shaft material to that of the Aqua Bound.

Pros
  • Light weight, length is adjustable and paddle angle is, too. Glad we spent a little extra on these.
Cons
  • The carbon shaft may make the paddle too expensive for some budgets
