Review on πŸ’‘ TORCHSTAR Basic Series 8-Pack 12W 6 Inch LED Recessed Lighting: Industrial Electrical Solution with Junction Box by Mark Hamblin

Revainrating 2 out of 5

The 2700k color temperature is wrong, the 100W equivalence rating is way above average.

Very disappointed with these lights. My first Torchstar purchase was a 6 inch 2700k equivalent 90w inline retrofit kit and I really liked them. Prices started to drop, I bought an 8 pack in February for a renovation project. They went back on sale earlier this month so I bought another pack of 8. I wish I could open the first pack and try them out during the return period because these are terrible compared to the aftermarket built-in bulbs. First, they're sold as equivalent 100-watt bulbs, which is 10 watts more than the upgraded ones, but they produce 400 lumens less. It's been some time since the upgraded bulbs were installed that I don't remember the lumen rating, only that they were equivalent to 90w so was expecting a bit more brightness compared to 10w bulbs. Scent for Intensity. If you go to the Energy Star website and look at Torchstar's lamp ratings, you'll find that all of their 100-watt equivalent lamps produce over 1,000 lumens. If you look at the lights where they are located, you will see that Energy Star does not provide equivalence ratings for lights. Basically, Torchstar is very dishonest about equivalence as it's nowhere near the equivalent of a 100w incandescent bulb. While they're looking at others, they're definitely not the only ones doing it in any way. This is a very dishonest estimate to make them look better than they are. Final Nail in the Coffin: While I was very disappointed with the output intensity, I had enough light to simply add more than planned to increase the overall intensity as long as I could see the color output. I bought 2700k bulbs as I prefer very warm incandescent lighting for home use. They give rooms a nice warm glow even at 3000k, above that it's even worse for home use, unless you like cold, matt, depressingly higher color temperatures (no offense of course, I just can't take it). higher colors) . temperature for domestic use). In any case, the original mods were perfect as I said, but they are definitely a lot closer to 3000k. They clearly look like 3000k lightbulbs and the work light I have and make my freshly painted walls look really dull and depressing compared to 2700k lamps. I was willing to sacrifice intensity, but color temperature was the last straw. I'm sending back a second set as luckily I'm within the returns window but with the first set I'll have to see if I can guarantee and get my money back as it's not as described. If the intensity was higher, or at least more honest, and the color was appropriate, I'd have no problem giving them a full five stars. I like the very slim design that doesn't require cans and they run significantly cooler than the modded ones, although that in itself isn't surprising given how much less intensity there is. Surprisingly, their estimated lifespan is 15,000 hours shorter than the modified ones. Unfortunately, this rating applies to the diodes themselves rather than the entire package. The circuit is much more likely to fail before the diodes reach their end, especially on retrofits where the circuit is running at much higher temperatures. They are slightly less efficient in terms of lumens/watt than mods that can impact estimated lifespan. Hope this review helps. I know that two stars seems low, more like the rating someone would give when complaining about something stupid or something that is clearly their own fault, but the issues I reviewed are clearly a total failure of these lights who do what they should and show dishonesty in marketing.
