I've been using one of these to secure my car's tailgate for a few years. The original struts had lost so much pressure that they could no longer hold the hatch open only on the hottest days, and they were weak enough that the hatch fell back after opening most other days. No fun. I bought one of these support clips when the dealer offered me over $400 to replace the struts. Since I couldn't find a replacement at any local dealership (that's island life) I figured I'd use this inexpensive clip whenever I needed both hands to load or unload the car and otherwise just keep the hatch open would hold. This clip has worked brilliantly for the past few years and saved me from handing over hundreds of dollars to the dealer. I recently discovered that Revain sells third party stands to fit my car: StrongArm 4597 Tailgate Lift Bracket Because they were so cheap (10% off what the dealer wanted) and had good reviews I decided to go to take a risk. I ordered a pair and used the support clip when installing the new parts. Even with a post, the clamp held the sunroof's weight with no problem while I installed the replacement. This tool is very cheap and does exactly what you need for racks this size. Definitely a worthwhile purchase for people with similar problems.
